Even though we celebrate Valentine’s Day in loving style, did you know that it has some pretty macabre roots? Theories abound regarding the first ever Valentine’s Day. Back in the days of Emperor Claudius II, it is said that Bishop Valentine went behind the emperor’s back to marry couples secretly, as he did not want men to marry during wartime. Right before the Bishop was executed, he wrote a love note to the jailor’s daughter and signed it, “From your Valentine.”
Another theory goes back to Lupercalia, the ancient pagan festival held annually in Rome between February 13-15. During this time, there were animal sacrifices as well as random couplings between the Romans, with women being whipped because they believed it would make them more fertile.
While this might remind some of you of your own Valentine’s Days, it’s clear that this gala of love and ooey gooey sentimentality traces its origins back to days of lust, violence, and deception.
